Is there a way to filter tags in the tags list? For instance, I have a tag, #root/aaa/bbb/ccc, it’s farily deeply buried, one quick way to get to it might be a text input at the top of the column where I type text and anything that doesn’t match the text I iinput disappears.

No, tags filtering can currently be done with Shortcuts but not with the UI. Yes, sidebar filtering is usually implemented as you suggested (maybe without a top search field) and I think it’s something we can consider at some point.
Would be very handy. In the meantime I might be able to get something working with Racast
