I just want to say, like lots of other commenters, I celebrate whatever you do to let us choose to not see markdown symbols. I work mostly on the Mac, where there are already ways to type bold, underline, italics and the rest.
Let the symbols show while I’m typing if you must, but not when I’m reading.
The “Auto Hide Markdown” menu item is a must for me.

We’re glad to hear that you are liking the hide markdown feature.
We love markdown, but due to some customer feedback we thought it’d be nice to let the users decide if the viewing of it was on or off.
