when typing highlights, quotes, code blocks, in fact anything that encloses text, it would be useful to have Bear auto-complete the closing characters.

I regard that as most convenient when you have that autopairing from wich you escape by enter key
(Assuming you are referring to normal typing) pairing is something we want to explore for code blocks but it’s tricky for any other styler. Excluding stylers without any closing marker (headers, quotes, lists, …) and links because from the pairing discourse for obvious reasons, the other inline stylers (strong, emphasis, highlights, …) uses characters that can be used without being paired and can be very annoying having to escape pairing each time if you want to write something with randoms * or =.
